The Faculty of Physical Education of Zhengzhou Shengda University originated from the Department of Public Physical Education. The department was restructured into a department-level unit in 2014 and renamed the Faculty of Physical Education in 2017. It currently offers one undergraduate program: Social Sports Guidance and Management, and two junior-college programs: Social Sports and International Standard Dance. There are 944 enrolled students including undergraduates, junior-college students and college-to-university transfer students.
The Faculty of Physical Education comprises the Public Physical Education Teaching and Research Section, the Teaching and Research Section for Social Sports Guidance and Management, the Sports Dance Teaching and Research Section, the Student Physical Fitness Test Center, the Institute of Sports and Health, the Sports Human Science Laboratory, the Teaching Office, and the Administrative Office (Counsellor Office). It is mainly tasked with professional talent cultivation, public physical education teaching, physical fitness testing, organization of mass sports activities, and development of student sports teams for the university.
Boasting a strong teaching force, the faculty has 6 professors, 16 associate professors, 4 PhD holders, and 58 full-time teachers with master’s degrees or above. Among its teaching staff are 2 International Master of Sports athletes, 2 National Master of Sports athletes, 8 National First-Class Athletes, 10 national-level referees, 6 senior coaches and 21 dual-qualification teachers, forming a high-level and professional teaching team.
The program of Social Sports Guidance and Management launched enrollment in 2014 and covers three academic levels: undergraduate, college-to-university transfer and junior college. This program cultivates high-quality applied sports talents who adapt to economic and social development and achieve all-round development in morality, intelligence, physical education, aesthetics and labor education. Students master the basic theories, knowledge and skills of social sports guidance and management, and acquire core capabilities for fitness consultation, technical instruction, event organization and planning, as well as operation and management in social-sports-related work. In the past three years, students have taken part in various national and provincial sports competitions and won multiple championships. As of 2024, 55 graduates from this program have been admitted to postgraduate programs at Henan University, Zhengzhou University, Harbin Sport University, Xi’an Physical Education University and other higher-learning institutions.
The International Standard Dance program started recruitment in 2014, with junior-college level available. It is currently a first-class construction program of the university. The program attaches importance to the comprehensive quality of students, emphasizes rigorous training of professional skills, improves their cultural literacy, and prioritizes postgraduate admission and employment. In 2024, its participants claimed the Group Championship in the University Professional Group at the 17th China University Sports Dance Championship and secured 12 titles at the 8th Henan Provincial Student Sports Dance Competition. As of 2024, a total of 26 students have been admitted to postgraduate studies at Capital University of Physical Education and Sports, Xi’an Physical Education University, Tianjin University of Sport and other universities.
The Faculty of Physical Education undertakes public physical education teaching and advances in-depth reform of integrating in-class and after-class sports. It offers compulsory public physical education courses for students, including basketball, volleyball, football, table tennis, badminton, tennis, track and field, martial arts, aerobics, sports dance and yoga.
The faculty takes charge of the university’s competitive sports work. It maintains multiple permanent campus student sports teams covering track and field, football, volleyball, basketball, sports dance, table tennis, line dance, orienteering, fitness and bodybuilding. Over the past three years, the university sports teams have obtained more than 30 honors including the first prize of the National University Healthy Campus Competition.
The faculty is responsible for mass sports on campus. A three-level campus sports competition mechanism has been established, enabling vigorous development of mass sports and dynamic sports associations. Two comprehensive sports events, namely the Spring Track and Field Games and the Autumn Fun Fitness Games, together with 12 individual competitions are held every year. Events such as the Winter Campus Marathon have become far-reaching brand competitions.
The Faculty of Physical Education manages the opening of university sports venues. The university is equipped with a comprehensive gymnasium, track-and-field stadium, tennis courts, volleyball courts, badminton courts and other facilities. Distinctive sports venues are built, including a lakeside running track, 3×3 basketball courts, fixed orienteering sites, quality-development grounds and diabolo courts. The faculty also owns a well-equipped Student Physical Fitness Test Center and Sports Human Science Laboratory. Adhering to public-welfare-oriented venue management, it provides thoughtful services for teachers and students.
