Our strong faculty consists of about 1000 part-time and full-time teachers. 54% of the teachers have either associate professorship or professorship and they are fine and outstanding professors and scholars. Our college provides every opportunity for its faculty members to go abroad for further study and to pursue advanced education. Moreover, visiting overseas scholars have been recruited for teaching positions.

Prof. Shen Li  Honorary Director of Foreign Language and Literature Department

   1.  Work Experience

Professor Shen Li was born on 18th of December, 1926 in Shangcai, Henan. He graduated in 1951 from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature of Beijing Furen University, an American missionary university, which later incorporated into the English Department of Beijing University. Prof. Shen previously was a professor of Henan Agricultural University, where he held the positions of Dean of Basic Courses Department, the commissioner of School Academic Committee, and took charge of the training for the government-sponsored study-abroad personnel, and the teaching of Intensive English and English Writing for post-graduates and the training class. During this period of time, Prof. Shen cultivated a galaxy of talents, five of whom received their doctorate degrees in America and New Zealand, many are professors now, and three are presidents or vice presidents of universities.

In February of 1996, Prof. Shen was enthusiastically invited to assume Dean of Foreign Languages and Literature Department at Shengda College by the former President Hou Heng. At that time, Business English was the only major of the department, and Prof. Shen was confronted with an unenviable legacy left by his American predecessor with the training objectives, curriculum setting and faculty in need of an immediate rectification. Through two years'hard work, Prof. Shen brought the whole department back to track with two new majors (Education English and Business Japanese) added and an increasing enrolment. Guided by the school-running ideas by the school founder Dr. Wang Guangya, the department has fully implemented his principle of "three strictnesses", i.e., the strictness in management, teaching and testing. Under the constant concern and support from the founder and the school leaders, the department, in the spirit of "to be the first, to be the best", strenghened the solidarity of the teaching staff, made the best possible use of the talents, vigorously implemented the teaching reforms, which aims at improving teaching, focuses on curriculum setting, teaching contents, teaching modes and teachihng methods. Considering Business English was already a universally-offered major, the department recognized originality as a must to gain a sharp edge over its counterparts in other colleges and universities. Through years of reforms, practice, exploration and summary, in 2003, the characteristics of Business English was clarified as "a good command of English, a sharp edge in listening and speaking and the basic knowledge of commerce". "A good command of English" refers to an intensive cultivation in both English knowledge and competence based on a solid foundation; "a sharp edge in listening and speaking" refers to highlighting the training of students' listening and speaking skills in aims of a communicative competence of accuracy and fluency, which can help in leaving a positive impression on others; "the basic knowledge of commerce" can faciliate a better placement of the graduates. Accordingly, Prof. Shen's students have received considerable distinctions and are among the elites in their fields. They have consistently taken home the first, second and third prizes in the Henan and National College English Public Speaking Contests; over 600 students furthered their study for master's degree, 10 were admitted to Oxford, Cambridge, Wuhan Universities, etc. for PhD study. The graduates' placement is also satisfying, from the UN, the Office of Foreign Affairs of Henan Province, the customs and Cinese Academy of Sciences to 28 colleges and universities, and they all attributed their achievements to the education of their Alma Master, Shengda College. As it has turned out, the characteristics of Business English is feasible and has become an honor to the school.

In addition to his distinguished leadership, Prof. Shen has engaged in the class-room teaching of the siminars and lectures on English Language and culture. His serious attitude, full-English teaching notes and teaching practice, rich and practical teaching contents, received considerable acclaim.

Prof. Shen was Dean of the department from 1996 to 2006, then the director of the School Teaching Supervision Office from 2006 to 2008, and from 2008 to present the Honorary Dean of the Foreign Languages and Literature Department.

3. Major Academic Activities

From 1986 to 1987, Prof. Shen was a visiting scholar at the Kansas State University, Kansas University, olahoma State University, Iowa State University and Minnesoda University of the U.S. for a study on the higher education and intensified English education, and an academic exchange with the presidents and the schools and departments concerned. Prof. Shen was also frequently invited to attend national and international academic conferences, such as "The National Semiar on English Teaching for Post-graduate Students" in Xi' an in 1990; "The National College English Test And Teaching Seminar " as chairman in Zhengzhou in 1992; "The International Liguistics Seminar" in Nanjing in 1993; "The International Seminar on English Teaching in China" in Beijing in 2001, where he presided and presented his paper An Exploration of the 21st Century College English Teaching Reform.

4. Major Publications

Prof.Shen has engaged in the study of English language and translation and English teaching for over 40 years, and his major publications are: A General English Textbook For Agricultural Colleges and Universities (Book I & II), Comprehensive English (Book I, II & III), Ghana; as chief editor in charge of the compilation of An English Writing Course for Post-graduates, An English Reading Course for Post-graduates, An English Listening Course for Post-graduates, etc. His translation works include American War Ecomony and Crisis, America Today, Selected Articles and Speeches of Harry Politt Vol.I & II, Global Travel Notes Vol.I & II, Cell Population Genetics, etc. His major Papersinclude The Development of Modern English, The Reforms of English Teaching for Post - graduate Students, A Study on the Teaching Reforms of College English Teaching of the 21st Century, Reforming Testing Assessment and Elevating Teaching Quality, etc.

5. Major Concurrent Posts

Prof. Shen, with his outstanding teaching and academic achievements, successively held the concurrent posts of the member of the Textbook Compiling Committee of National Agricultural Colleges and Universities of Agricultural Ministry and the director of Foreign Language Discipline Group, chief and deputy examiner of CET Band 4 and Band 6 of Henan Province, President of Henan Association of Post-graduates Foreign Language Teaching, Director of Henan Higher Education Academy, President of Henan Association of College Foreign Language Teaching, Chairman of the Master Dissertation Committee of Foreign Language School of Henan University, Chairman of the Master Dissertation Committee of Foreign Language School of Zhengzhou University, Director of Foreign Language Discipline Group of the Evaluation Committee of Senior Titles of Higher Education of Henan Province, Deputy Director of the Evaluation Committee of Senior Titles of Translation of Henan Province, Standing Director of National Association of Post-graduate Foreign Language Teaching, and Director of English Teaching Association of China. Currently, he holds the position of Honorary President of Hanan Association of College English Teaching.

6. Major Honors and Prizes

In addition to school honors and prizes, Prof. Shen was conferred the title of Henan Excellent Post-graduate supervisor by Henan Province in 1988, was approved to receive the special allowance of the State Council in 1992, and was conferred the title of Civilization Teacher of Henan Province through strict qualification censor in 1998.
