On December 8, Shengda held the final round of its second annual Interpreting Contest in the Multi-purpose Hall of the Foreign Language Building. The eight finalists, who had passed two preliminary rounds, were to face their last and most difficult round.

Present were Dean Ma Bing Yi, Professor Lu Dong, Teacher Zhang Li Juan, Teacher Niu Wen Wen and Teacher Kong Jie. Dean Ma opened the event with a speech on interpretation career prospects and encouraged all students to practice their interpretation skills. He also thanked the devoted teachers who arranged this contest.

The contestants were scored in three categories: sight reading, audio translation and mock conversation. Topics ranged from politics and economics to culture, sports and ecology. The finalists, who were only given a long list of words related to the topics before the event, wowed the audience with their interpretation abilities. During intermission, volunteers played a word guessing game.

The championship was captured by Wu Yang, an interpretation major. Second tier winners were Wang Yuan Yuan and Zhou Huan. Third tier winners were Li Zhen Zhen, Fu Xing Yi and Zhou Kai. This competition allowed English majors to utilize interpretational English in quasi-formal situations.
